Getting Google’s view of your site, and diagnosing potential problems
The first step to increasing your site’s visibility on Google is learning how our robots crawl and index your site.

  • Crawl info: You can make sure that Google have access your site, and see when Googlebot last visited. You can also view URLs that we’ve had trouble crawling and why we couldn’t crawl them. This way, you can fix any problems preventing us from indexing all of your pages.
  • Robots.txt file validation: See if we’re having trouble with your file, and test out changes to that file before you change it on your server. You can input your robots.txt and it will give you reply if it is ok or not.
  • Website content: View top content from your site and see the words that other sites use to link to your site.

Seeing how your site performs
A second step is learning what drives traffic to your site.

  • Top queries: Find the top queries that drive traffic to your site and where your site is included in the top search results. This will let you learn how users are finding your site. ( With this report you could always use a redirect method in order to have a continues crawl at your site. You have to remember that crawler stops if it encounter Error 404. And therefore it is not healthy for your blog. )
  • Indexing information: See how your site is indexed and which of your pages are included in the index. If we find violations in your site, we’ll give you the opportunity to fix the problems and request re-inclusion of your site.

One of the useful tool of Google Webmaster Tools is telling you the numbers of site being indexed by Google vs the number of links that your sitemap is reporting. So this can give you an idea on how you can improve your site navigation.

Normally a crawler will stop as long as there are any broken links that is it being encountered. So why would you let the crawl stop ? You have to redirect it.

SEO Tips : Changing Category, Tags and Search Pages

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

I have some changes in my site. The changes is made at Search Results and Category Pages and Tag Pages. The category pages will now only show the title of the pages and not the content. In order to check for the content you can always pick the title and it will proceed to the the post page.

This is another experiment in this blog. I know that by doing this I can direct the Search Engine Crawler directly to the post and not only part of the post. There is also a possibility of having an increase of post page views that will also increase of possibility of having Targeted Visitors. It will also prevent the issue of duplicate content since it will not show any content in Category Pages , Search Pages and Tag Pages.

I have also modified my robot.txt during implementation of this experiment and remove restriction in my Category pages and tag Pages. [ Disallow: /category/ & Disallow: /tag/ ].

I have strong feelings that this will succeed. It will increase an index page of my site without having problem with duplicate content. This will have a good effect on my SEO Campaign for this blog.

I hope this will result better navigation of my site.

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Tips is for WordPress User :

Ok it seems that my topic for the week involves designing a blog , I would like to discuss today tips where you can design your blog, This will involve WordPress Tweaking and making your new blog and design . I will also mix Design Tips with an SEO tips so that those pages will be optimized.

You can check your web design if it is compliant to a well know web design standard by checking some design issues that was shown in w3.org.

Designing Your Category Pages

We know that a Category Page produces a duplicate content within our Website. And we also knew that duplicate content is not healthy in our blog. So by knowing this basic SEO idea we can design our category page in a way that We can show to our visitors our category pages in a manner that it can easily be navigated and at the same time Search Engine Crawler Friendly.

So the best way to do this is to change the way our category page shown to visitors and Search Engine crawlers. I would like to teach on how I made my category pages which only shows the Permalink of the post including the the other category where the post belong. I have leave that dates so that my readers will know when I made the post. Although in the Post Pages I have decided to remove those dates since I believe that most of my page is Time Less. ( ehem )

WordPress Codes

Below are the previous codes of my category php

<h1><a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” rel=”bookmark”><?php the_title(); ?></a></h1>
<div class=”date”>
<?php the_time(’F j, Y’); ?> &middot; Filed Under <?php the_category(’, ‘) ?> &middot; <?php comments_popup_link(’Comment’, ‘1 Comment’, ‘% Comments’); ?>&nbsp;<?php edit_post_link(’(Edit)’, ”, ”); ?>
</div>

Here is my new codes

<h2><a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” rel=”follow”><?php the_title(); ?></a></h2>
<div class=”date”>
<?php the_time(’F j, Y’); ?> | <?php the_category(’, ‘) ?> | <?php edit_post_link(’(Edit)’, ”, ”); ?>
</div>

You may copy my new codes if you want to copy my new category Pages Design. I am experimenting on the H Tags that is why I have replaced it with H2 rather that H1. Since I would like to optimized the category page name as H1. If this will not succeed I will replace them again with h1. I have also change rel tag from bookmark to follow . I am just testing it.

Hope you like this tips.

SEO Common Follow-ups

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Google is what considered to be the biggest search engine on Internet world and when it comes to the point of SEO,  google is very strict, its main focus is on high-quality text with some links pointing to it. Google considers websites that constantly add content much more useful than websites that add content infrequently.This is the main reason of which you should set yourself a realistic target for the production of new content and stick to it. It totally depends upon you how ambitious you are, you can aim for one new page of content per day or per week. Anything to everything you choose, just keep in mind that Google likes fresh content. It has special priveledge for websites that focus on creating new content over websites that keep updating their existing content again and again. In other words, Google wants to see that you are working hard to generate some good content, not on optimizing content that you already pasted on your website.

Sitemap for SEO of a Website

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Sitemap usually shows the overall structure of a website. A good sitemap can be useful to improve the indexation of your website in search engines. Because search engines can follow the sitemap to understand your site structure and pages. The search engines like Google have a huge database of websites and their pages. The search engines get the info about websites by using a software called web crawler or web bot or spiders. These softwares find the pages and their contents from a website and then save a link of those website to search engine’s database.

Whenever a person type some keywords for searching, the first thing search engines do, is to search through their database to find links of pages that contains those keyword information. So if a website have a lot of pages indexed in search engine’s database, that website will comes at most top position in search result pages. And definitely that website will get more number of visitors.

One of the most effective techniques of SEO is to create a well organized sitemap of a website. Sitemaps are the best way to provide an easy structure of your website to search engines. If your sitemap is saved in a search engine’s database in a proper structure, your pages can be filtered more quickly for search queries.

SEO sitemaps are usually contains links of the pages, their short description with them and the last modification date of that page. That does not give 100% guarantee that the sitemaps pick a website at top in search results, but it can boost the search queries made by visitors and can provide the better results.

There are many online sitemap generator tools available on net, most of them are free to use. You can build a sitemap structure of your website and then post it to search engines like google, yahoo etc.

How to Increase Backlinks

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

What are backlinks? Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. Backlinks enable you to keep track of other pages on the web that link to your posts. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node (Björneborn and Ingwersen, 2004). Backlinks are also called incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.

Increasing backlinks to your site is very easy, but something that typically is totally overlooked. So many bloggers worry about why their posts/articles don’t receive any comments… where in reality you should be only worried about commenting on other blog sites. Commenting is the key to increasing backlinks. For every comment you leave on another blog site, eventually this will count as a backlink. It does take time for Google to account for the link and attribute the backlink back to your site. It seems like once every four months is when Google updates their PageRank. But again, its just a matter of time before Google does find the pages you comment on.

Additionally, as these pages that you comment on increase in their own PageRank, so will your page that links from these pages. Commenting on other sites is very important towards increasing backlinks to your site. Also it is important that you do not spam people on other sites. If you comment on another site, make sure the content reflects that high quality and unique content already found on your site. Google bots as well as people are less interested in comments that say, “Hey, nice site… I liked your article”. It is better to add your opinion, view, or suggestion in comments.

The more content you add, the more keyword groups Google will eventually tag up with your content.

How to Get Traffic and Links from Popular Blogs: Networking and Email Pitching

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

When you are growing your business or blog, a link from a popular blog can help a great deal. It will bring you interested visitors and perhaps some secondary links or traffic from other bloggers who follow the popular blog.

The question begs to be asked: Just how do you get a mention and link from these influential bloggers?

It’s really not difficult. You’ll only have to pitch your business or website by sending them an email. After all, bloggers can only write about something when they are aware that it exists, wouldn’t you agree?

The unfortunate truth is that email promotions are not often not enough to guarantee a link or mention, especially when the blogger in question is incredibly busy or receives lots of emails everyday. To increase the chances of a successful email pitch, you’ll need to build a tactical relationship with the specific blogger.
Online Networking is About Building the Right Connections

The most important to remember is this: online networking shouldn’t be any different from the way you socialize off-line. You don’t just go up to someone and ask them to promote your product in their shop. At the very least, you need to introduce yourself and establish a relationship of trust before the other person will bite.

Pitching your website to another blogger is no different. I used to work in a PR firm and was in charge of cold calling and cold emailing publications and journalists to pitch a specific press release or story for my clients.

I can honestly tell you that I had a much greater chance of getting publicity for a client when I was on familiar and good terms with the journalist or editor.

If you are just a new name or face to them, they probably won’t give you the time of the day unless your story is absolutely groundbreaking. Don’t just drop an email and hope for the best. Leave nothing to chance. Build a working relationship with the right people for the best effect.
How to Effectively Get Traffic and Links from Popular Blogs

The following tips stem from my personal experience as a blogger who has pitched articles and received pitches in return. They reflect what I feel is the best way to get some attention or links from popular blogs. Because of their time-intensive nature, they might not be necessary for blogs with a small audience.

In essence, you are using these tactics to target large blogs with a wide readership, in order to get the maximum traffic and exposure for your website or business. These methods are largely cost-free and do not require any or much money at all.

1. Find Your Angle. Every successful pitch needs an angle. If you are really interested in targeting a popular blog, take a look at what they publish regularly to get an idea of what they kind of content they will run.

Create your content with this angle in mind and pitch it accordingly. Creating content of a specific slant is quite easy to do and the rewards are high if you succeed in getting a mention. You can always go back to your usual content type or format after that happens.

2. Create the Perfect Pitch. There are some general rules to follow. Make your email concise and compelling. Check your copy and punctuation. Introduce yourself briefly. Use the blogger’s first name. Don’t flatter too much. Refer to specific posts when making comments. Be polite. Focus on their interests and benefits. Offer alternative means of communication (e.g. phone, IM).

3. Establish Prior Email Contact. Asking someone to link to or check out your site in your very first email is poor strategy. Build up a regular email flow by sending an email to the blogger, without selling or promoting your website.

One of the best ways to do this is to ask a question or simply thank them for their wonderful website and content, which you’ve found helpful. You can also give helpful feedback on the site in general. This instantly elevates you from the rest of the crowd when you eventually decide to pitch an article.

4. Use Comments to Network. Many people have written about how comments can get you traffic from blogs but their true value lies in their networking potential. Comments are one of the easiest ways to get the attention of any blogger. Make sure you comment regularly and contribute to the discussion.

Refrain from pitching your own website or article within the comment section. Try to get at least 10 comments on separate blog posts before you even consider pitching your article.

5. Promote them with Social Media. Bloggers regularly check their sources of traffic and submitting their website to social media sites like StumbleUpon and Digg is a great way to get on their radar. StumbleUpon in particular, can send hundreds of visitors to any site and its a really easy way to get noticed.

Just remember to tie the social media account you are using with your own website by inserting your URL or site name in the profile. Alternatively, forums are also a great way to share the blogger’s content.

6. Set up an Internal Connection. Very large blogs are businesses. Sometimes it is difficult to break through the attention barrier and get noticed because these sites receive a lot of email pitches everyday. The easiest way to jump ahead of others is to establish personal contact with an inside source.

For example, some of the staff writers or editors have their own personal blogs. Go visit and comment on these blogs and befriend the specific individual. Another alternative is to find a friend who has direct contact with an internal staff and ask your friend to introduce you to the specific person.

7. Link to them and send them traffic. This works particularly well if you have a website or blog of your own. Link to the blogger you are targeting a couple of times and reference their articles. Put them on your blogroll if you have one. Remember, a link doesn’t cost you anything but it may get you traffic and exposure in return.

This is a great way to let the blogger know that you support their website. Even if the specific blog gets many links everyday, you will eventually be noticed somehow, particularly if you can send them some traffic.

8. Get Friends to Email Pitch your Article. Get a friend or another blogger to promote your website by sending an email tip. Some bloggers are not in favor of excessive self-promotion so this might give your specific site or article some extra validity. If you want to, get a few other friends to email pitch the same article. Bear in mind that you shouldn’t use this technique often because it is easy to tell if you’re artificially promoting your website via email.

9. Use Alternative Contact Channels. Another way to get instant attention is to contact the bloggers on alternative communication channels. This include microblogging platforms, social networks and Instant Messengers. Not every blogger will have their details listed publicly but for those that do, consider using these alternative channels. Not many people will use these methods of communication and you’ll tend to stand out immediately.

10. Donations and Tips. Tipping bloggers and offering donations is a great way to show your appreciation for their work. This can be easily done if they have a Paypal donation button somewhere but even if they don’t, you can also email them to request for a paypal address. This is low cost and simple but it can definitely increase your potential for getting a mention in the future.

Other blog-oriented methods like guest blogging will allow you to get traffic and links as well but I’ve not included them as this article is not only for bloggers but online business owners and perhaps, even public relations executives and marketers.

Your aim here is to build up an advantageous relationship by interacting with the blogger and appealing to their self-interest. How much time you need really depends on how you good you are at networking.

I would suggest actively networking for a minimum period of two weeks before you start to pitch your own material. And one more word of advice: make sure the article, product or website you pitch is excellent, grade A material.
What Works on You Will Work on Others Too

Just to prove my point even further, let’s do a little test right now. Would you link to someone you absolutely don’t know, who has contacted you for the first time with an email pitch for an article that isn’t relevant to your site?

Or would you rather link to someone who you know, who has linked to you multiple times, comments regularly on your site, emails you with feedback and genuine queries and lastly, offers an article that is perfect for your site audience?

I’m quite sure you all know the answer to this one.
